Early Life & College

Thomas was born into golf – his grandfather and his father, Mike, who remains his coach, were both PGA club professionals in Kentucky – and he grew up on a driving range in every meaningful sense. A standout junior, he played at the University of Alabama, winning a national title and the individual honours as college golf’s best player before turning professional in 2013. The transition was swift: within four years he was a major champion and the world’s top-ranked golfer.

The Majors & No. 1

Thomas won his first major at the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, the centrepiece of a season that also brought the FedEx Cup, Player of the Year honours, and a 59 at the Sony Open. He rose to World No. 1 in 2018. His second major, the 2022 PGA at Southern Hills, was the more dramatic: he began the final round seven shots off the lead, charged home, and won a play-off, one of the great closing-day comebacks in recent major history. Add the 2021 Players Championship and the résumé is that of a genuine modern great.

Peaks & Valleys

Thomas’s career has not been a straight line. A prolonged slump in form and putting cost him his place at the very top and, for a time, his automatic standing in American teams, and he has spoken candidly about the mental toll of it. But the talent has never been in doubt, and the returns to form – the low rounds, the run of birdies that only the best can produce – have repeatedly reminded the game of his class. Few players generate momentum, or a roaring gallery, quite like Thomas in full flight.

Playing Style

Thomas is an aggressive, emotional, feel-based player – long for his relatively slight frame, brilliant with his wedges, and possessed of a fist-pumping intensity that makes him one of the tour’s most watchable competitors. He is also one of its most respected: a Ryder and Presidents Cup stalwart whose passion in the team room is prized as highly as his ball-striking. When the putter is warm, he can go as low as anyone in golf.
